Camp Culture
We are a small camp with about 25 counselors and 100 campers (ages +/- 7 - 16). We have a total of about 35 staff at camp including kitchen, maintenance, program and administrative staff. For the most part, all staff members live at Bishopswood, though occasionally we have staff who live locally and come to work at camp by day. Our counselors work hard to create a nurturing, fun, and fairly structured program. You have the opportunity to meet people from different parts of the country and perhaps from other countries. It's very hard work but the rewards of achievement and accomplishment are worth it!
Our camp culture is very accepting of a variety of people. We have people from varying religious backgrounds, people from different social economic backgrounds, we have gay and lesbian staff, and we strive for a population of racial diversity. To work at Bishopswood it is important that you not only tolerate these differences among people but also welcome the opportunity of working in a community with all sorts of people.
We value diversity and accept candidates for employment without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation, cultural background or social-economic status. We expect staff members to have a relatively conservative appearance (minimal tattoos and minimal body piercing) in order to keep attention focused on the children, and so as not to be distracting as we interact with a variety of adults. We feel strongly that our staff members are adults and are able to responsibly handle their own socializing, sleep needs, and time-off behavior. We are not a partying kind of camp. Generally, people are pretty tired after a long day and welcome a little down time with friends in the evening, and are ready for sleep between 10:30-11:30 at night. Our counselors are notoriously committed, dedicated, and invested in their ministry of working with children in the unique community of summer camp.
